Today Southall is a large suburban area of west London in the Borough of Ealing, located just 17 kilometres from Charing Cross, enjoying excellent transport links to London. Back in the mid-1800s it was a town in Middlesex with Southall Green just a quiet, rural village. The town has a Tudor styled Manor House and the southern part of the town once had a large open area called Southall Green. The town held races in 1865 on Southall Down at Barn Farm, holding its inaugural two day meeting on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th September 1865 when entries were made at the White Hart Inn. The principal event on the card, the Juvenile Plate, was won by Katherine for Mr Filmer. An Ordinary was served at the same location after racing each day. That first meeting was so successful and well-supported that it was repeated for the next 6 years until a final card was held on Friday 31st March 1871. |
